Man dies in pit laterine

A commuter bus driver plying Ikeja-Obalende route, Lagos State, southwest Nigeria fell inside a pit latrine and died this morning. As at press time, the body of the driver, Mr. Mutiu Owo, who lived at 7 Alimotu Sadia Street, Alagbole, off Coker Street, Cele Bus Stop, where the incident happened, was yet to be removed from the pit latrine by Fire Service men from Akute, Lagos who were contacted by residents of the area. A resident, Prophet Soji Ademuyiwa of Celestial Church Ogudu Parish, Lagos said the driver, an indigene of Ekiti State, fell inside the pit latrine when he wanted to urinate around 9am after the heavy rainfall today. Ademuyiwa said the driver, a father of two, who was in his 20s, wanted to take his bath but when he found out that a co-tenant was bathing, went to ease himself in another toilet, which was dilapidated. Dora's gist learnt that the tenants of the house where the incident occurred had complained about the bad state of the latrine to the landlady who does not live in the house, but no effort has been made to repair it. Dora's gist gathered that the condition of the toilet worsened this morning because of the heavy rainfall. Residents of the area have besieged the house to sympathize with Owo's wife, who sells fruits at Alade Market, Ikeja Lagos, while the efforts were being made to remove his body from the latrine. Owo's wife was yet to be informed about his death as she has threatened to kill herself if he died.

Evil mom superglues baby's hand to the wall

A Texas judge has sentenced a mother who superglued her toddler’s hands to a wall to 99 years in prison, local media reported Saturday. During the September 2011 assault on her two-year-old daughter, Elizabeth Escalona also beat the girl into a coma, according to The Dallas Morning News. The 23-year-old mother of five had pleaded guilty in July to felony injury to a child. “I hit her, I kicked her constantly, and she didn’t deserve that,” the newspaper’s crime blog quoted Escalona as saying in court last week. “Only a monster does that.” According to the blog, the abuse — which resulted in bleeding of the girl’s brain — appeared to be over potty training. Woman kills soldier hubby with acid

Military authorities in Ilorin, Kwara State capital have arrested a middle-aged housewife (name withheld) who allegedly killed her soldier- husband for yet unknown reasons. The incident occurred last week, according to reliable sources at the 22 Armoured Brigade, Sobi, Ilorin, catching many residents of the Block 55 home of the deceased by surprise. The sources confirmed that the case had been transferred to the police command following the death of the soldier. The woman was alleged to have bathed her husband with acid at about 10.00p.m, few weeks after she had allegedly attempted to terminate his life through food poisoning. Indeed, the man had just returned from the military hospital where he received treatment for food poisoning before the latest incident that led to his death. The deceased, identified simply as Sergeant Kayode, a native of Ilofa in Oke-Ero Local Government Area of Kwara State, while the wife hailed from a community in Kaduna State. They had two children from their union. The deceased, believed to have been in his 40s, was working with the Supply and Transport Corps of the Brigade before his untimely death. A source at the barracks said authorities were taken aback by the dastardly act given the fact that the deceased was not known to be a violent man while alive. Investigators were told that neighbours of the deceased had raised the alarm following a wild scream from his room and upon entering found that he had been bathed with acid from head down to toe. Although the woman was said to have denied involvement, investigators were said to have discovered a bottle containing the substance believed to be the leftover of the acid used in the operation. She reportedly told investigators that she did not know anything about the acid claiming even that on the night in question, she had performed her conjugal duties to her husband. But she was said to have told investigators that the door to their room was locked from behind during the incident prompting neighbours to point the finger to her as the first suspect before they even found the bottle in the room. “Yes, the military set up a board of inquiry into the matter and it was after the investigation that the case was transferred to the police,” said the source who preferred anonymity because he had no authorisation to speak with the media on the issue. He added that several senior officers who were familiar with the fact that the man had just been treated for food poisoning were touched by the turn of event.

Popular actor, Nkem Nwoh, has been dragged before the Enugu State Commissioner of Police in a petition signed by a widow, whose land the actor is alleged to have fraudulently acquired. On September 30, according to the report, Osuofia who bought a disputed land, went to that portion of land with thugs, where a widow had built a house, demolished the entire building. The land, meanwhile belongs to this widow, who had secured it with her husband before his demise. Somehow, Osuofia got the title documents from God knows where and when it became clear he wrongfully bought the land, he tried to beg the widow, Mrs Gloria Ayogu, to sell but the woman blatantly refused. When it was evident that the woman wouldn’t bug, Nkem, we gather, persuaded and later started threatening the widow. But the woman insisted she was not selling because that was the only thing her husband, Late Ben Ayogu, left for her three young children, the oldest was just five years when their father died. Osuofia, we gathered, resorted to the use of force, he was said to have mobilised thugs to demolish the house on September 30. “I call on men of goodwill to join in condemning this dastardly act of this man. He had been bribing his way around police circles but a petition is currently before the Enugu State Commissioner of Police on this matter,” said the widow. Soon after the contest was over, Archbold fell ill and began to vomit, the Broward County Sheriff's Office said Monday. A friend called for medical help. EFCC staff jailed for taking bribes

2 Two officers of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Douglas William and Abba Ishaku were on Thursday given five-year prison terms for accepting bribes. The two officers were arraigned on October 17, 2010, before an Abuja High Court presided over by Justice Abubakar Umar on a four-count of conspiracy and obtaining money under false pretence. Misters William and Ishaku were sentenced to two years each on counts one and two; and six months each on counts three and four. The sentences are however to run concurrently. The two officers were arrested in 2010 in a ‘sting operation’. Until their arrest, the officers were stationed at the reception of the EFCC headquarters in Wuse, Abuja. The officers allegedly demanded N100, 000 from Kullima Kachalla, a former Chairman of Bama Local Government in Borno state in 2010, by posing as investigators of the EFCC. They were alleged to have asked Mr Kachalla to send them the money in order to bribe other investigators of the Commission to destroy a petition written to the EFCC, which indicted him (the former chairman) for alleged mismanagement of public funds. During their trial, the court was told that Mr Kachalla had alerted the EFCC of the action of the two accused persons, necessitating an undercover operation, where an EFCC officer, posing as Mr Kachalla’s representative, arranged a meeting with the accused. Mr Ishaku, second accused, allegedly called Mr Kachalla by telephone, asking him to bring the money to the Commission’s office in Wuse, Abuja. It was in the course of the receipt of the money that the two staff were arrested and subsequently arraigned. In his ruling, Justice Umar said because the convicts have suffered enough humiliation, their sentence should start from the date of their arraignment being October 18, 2010.

Terror in Jalingo as dinking bar is bombed

Just some days after the slaying of 40 people in Adamawa state by yet to be identified gunmen, terrorists have struck in the nearby Taraba state, letting off a bomb at a drinking joint. One person was confirmed dead and 11 others injured, following the blast at the drinking joint in Jalingo,Taraba late on Thursday. The explosion occurred at Dorowa Ward off Barde Way in Jalingo at about 7.40 p.m. The Police Public Relations Officer of the Taraba State Police Command, Mr Amos Olaoye, confirmed the incident but said he was not fully briefed on the details. At the Federal Medical Centre, Jalingo, a Medical Officer, Dr Umaru Yakubu, disclosed that one person was confirmed dead while three others whose conditions he described as critical, were rushed to the theatre of the hospital. He said that eight others whose injuries were mild were receiving treatment at the accident and emergency ward of the hospital. HIV infected woman sues hubby for not sleeping with her

A MAGISTRATE has thrown out an application by an HIV positive woman who wanted her husband to be compelled to made love with her. The woman, from Domboshava just outside Harare, told magistrate Miriam Banda at the Harare Civil Courts on Tuesday that her husband had not had sex with her for six months. “This is a violation of my rights,” the woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, told the magistrate.  “He is not meeting my conjugal rights. When I married him, I did not choose to simply stay in his house eating sadza, but to enjoy sex with him.” But the man told the court his wife had been unfaithful. “She went for HIV tests and she was tested positive. She now engages in so many sexual activities with several men. Even our child once informed me of men who sometimes come to my house having sexual intercourse with her,” he claimed. “She decided to chase away the child because he reported everything that she does.”  Magistrate Banda asked him if the couple still shared a bed to which he replied: “Yes, we share the same bed, but nothing further.” He also denied his wife’s claims that he had abused her, charging: “I am not violent, neither am I abusing her in any way. She even comes home drunk and she hosts parties without my knowledge. How do you expect me to made love with her?” The magistrate said courts could not force married people to made love and advised the couple to file for divorce if their marriage has broken down.

The Nigeria Police Division in Itori, Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun State was turned into a boxing arena on Tuesday when two traditional rulers engaged each other in fisticuffs over disagreement on a cultural festival. The two traditional rulers involved in what many have described as desecration of the Yoruba culture and tradition were Olu of Itori, Oba Akorede Akamo and Baale Lapeleke, Chief Adisa Akinremi. Daily Sun reliably gathered that Akinremi had gone to the police station to lodge complaints against Oba Akamo and the police invited the latter to defend himself. Akinremi was said to have complained about the alleged disruption of a cultural ceremony being staged by natives of a neighbouring village the night previous. Daily Sun learnt that it was while Akamo was trying to defend himself that he got angry and allegedly slapped Akinremi, who retaliated as well as went ahead to beat the attacker up to the extent that he (Akamo) scampered for safety. The Owu people in Lapeleke camp township, a suburb town of Itori in the local government area were at the height of celebrating the annual Owu Cultural and Heritage Renaissance Festival. The Owu festival had earlier been flagged off at the palace of the Olowu of Owu in Abeokuta on Monday. Akamo was alleged to have led a group of people believed to be thugs, armed with guns and cutlasses and shot sporadically leading to the disruption of the ceremony. Several people were injured in the melee and property yet to be estimated were destroyed. While the injured had been taken to a hospital in Abeokuta for treatment, Daily Sun also learnt that a number of arrests had been made and the suspects were being questioned at the Itori Police Station. The two traditional rulers were also said to have made statements to the police, while the matter had been transferred to the state police headquarters for further investigations. Although the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, could not be reached for comments, a senior police officer in the command who spoke with Daily Sun on condition of anonymity confirmed the incident. “The matter has been transferred here and the two traditional rulers have made useful statements to the police. The issue of gun totting by anyone, whether the person had licence to use it or not, is a serious allegation which we are also investigating.”

Jonathan in his 52nd Independence Day broadcast told Nigerians that the global corruption watch body, Transparency International, rated Nigeria second after United States in anti-corruption efforts. The claim has been found to be untrue with many accusing Jonathan of telling a lie. In fact, TI has reportedly denied issuing such a report. Furious at the development, the President has reportedly ordered a probe to discover the source of the misinformation.

Lagos State Police Command has arrested six suspected kidnappers who allegedly killed an United States returnee in Lagos. The victim, Oddi Nweze was said to have gone to buy some items along Old Ojo Road, Satellite Town when the hoodlums who wanted to kidnap him ended up shooting him. The businessman, Nweze was said to have struggled with the kidnappers, who out of annoyance shot him dead, about two weeks ago. The six suspects, Chibuzor Osuagwu, Oliver Nwabueze, Kevin Emenike, Uche Igbani, a woman, Ngozi Onuowu and another suspect were alleged to be among the eight members of the syndicate that committed the dastardly act. The suspects who were described by the police as notorious were alleged to be responsible for many of the kidnappings and armed robberies in the country. Their method of operation was to abduct their victims and take them to their enclave at Ago Area of Okota before demanding for ransom. The bubble burst for the suspects when the police set their kingpin, Kevin Emenike up through a young woman who was chatting with him through the social media. When the kingpin finally succumbed to the bait, he came from Port Harcourt where he was hiding to take the woman at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), and he was arrested by detectives led by the Area 'E' Commander, Mr. Dan Okoro, an Assistant Commissioner of Police. Five out of the suspects who spoke with Daily Sun owned up to the crime, while one of them claimed he was a motorcycle operator. One of the suspects, Emenike confessed that his role was to collect the ransom from the victims' families, which he would hand over to, Uche Igbani who was in charge of the enclave. According to Emenike he had participated in four operations, adding that the first kidnap operation was at Satellite, where the gang received N4 million ransom. He said his share of the money was N250,000. He said the second operation, which was at FESTAC Town earned the gang N5 million and his share was N300,000. The third operation, which, he said, was at Amuwo Odofin Area earned the gang N1.1 million. The suspect said his share was N100,000, while the last operation, which took place at Satellite Town earned the gang N1.2 million. His was N100,000 Another suspect, Osuagwu claimed the victims were usually taken to a flat where he lives with his wife. He said he lives in one room while the gang also used one room to hide the victims. Osuagwu alleged he received only N30,000 from the gang. He said he was paid N10,000 and N20,000 in two operations. Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Umar Manko said the late businessman was abducted near Oxpharm Store along Old Ojo Road, Satellite Town and later killed by the eight-man gang who operated on four motorcycles. "We are not linking Oxpharm Store to the kidnap saga. The suspects were on their own in the nefarious business operations." Manko said one AK 49 rifle, 78 7.2mm ammunition, five loaded magazines, a Toyota Hilux van and two motorcycles were recovered from the suspects. The police boss said the suspects would be charged with armed robbery, kidnapping and the murder of Oddi Nweze.

LOS ANGELES(AFP) – Arnold Schwarzenegger admitted he had multiple affairs during his doomed 25-year marriage to Maria Shriver, but said fathering a child with their housekeeper was the “stupidest” thing he did. In a TV interview timed with the publication of his memoirs Monday, the former bodybuilder and Hollywood star told how Shriver confronted him about the child the day after he left office as California governor in January 2011. He also admitted he had a habit of living “in denial” and keeping secrets, including not telling Shriver that he was going to run for governor until days before he announced it, and trying to conceal having heart surgery from her. “That’s the way I handle things. And it always has worked. But, I mean it does not — it’s not the best thing for people around me because I sometimes – some information I just keep to myself,” he told the CBS show “60 Minutes.” “So I became an expert in living in denial,” he said. Shriver filed for divorce in July last year citing “irreconcilable differences” with her husband, whom she met in 1977 and married in 1986, following him into the California governor’s mansion in 2003. Schwarzenegger had admitted in May 2011 that he had fathered a child, called Joseph and born in 1997, with the family’s long-time housekeeper, Mildred Baena, and announced the couple’s separation. In the “60 Minutes” interview, he said he realized when Joseph was about seven or eight that the boy resembled him physically, and while not discussing it openly, began giving his mother financial support. The housekeeper remained in their employment, and Joseph even played with the couple’s children. But her suspicions grew and she finally confronted him the day after he left office, when they saw a marriage counselor. Shriver asked him point blank: “Hey, I think that Joseph is your kid,” to which he replied: “You’re absolutely correct.” She filed for divorced a few weeks later. “I think it was the stupidest thing I’ve done in the whole relationship. Couple spend £6,000 rescuing a cat

Wonders shall never end... See waste . A couple who spent £6,000 bringing a stray cat back from Egypt to escape the revolution are devastated after it went missing. Railton and Dawn Elliott fell in love with the tabby called 'Omar' and decided to save him from violence sweeping the country during the Arab Spring. The couple shelled out a fortune in quarantine and vets' bills and the lucky pet settled into his new life at their home in rural Oxfordshire. But Omar vanished two weeks ago and the pair have now launched a high-profile search, plastering the local area in 'missing' posters. Dawn, 46, who runs a confectionary company with her husband, said: "We're absolutely heartbroken. "We'd give anything to have him back. He's such a lovely and friendly creature." Railton added: "We were left with no option but to bring him home with us. I've had cats all my life and never known one to be so gentle, so loving and tender." The couple first met Omar as they bathed on a veranda outside their apartment in the Red Sea resort of El Gouna in February 2011. Railton said: "The holiday resort was huge but deserted, so we were upgraded to a villa right on the beach front. The next morning the most beautiful cat appeared. "It was clear that he was an abandoned, not feral, cat. "He had sought refuge in a bush immediately to the front of our villa and over the next few days we fed him three times a day with food we collected from the hotel buffet. "We became great friends with our new chum whom we named Omar in homage to the great actor, Omar Sharif." At the time Egypt was sliding towards civil war as President Hosni Mubarak was being overthrown and the Elliotts believe Omar may have been abandoned as his owners fled. Railton, 57, added: "There weren't any towns nearby, or houses or villages. "People were leaving Egypt in droves at that time, and I think someone took the decision that if they were to leave their cat at the hotel, he might stand a chance of survival." Before leaving after their ten-day break they paid for Omar to be cared for at a local cattery while they sorted the paperwork to bring him home. A month later Omar was loaded onto a plane in Luxor, Egypt, and flown to Gatwick Airport where he was collected by pet import specialists Precious Pets. Omar spent the following six months in quarantine at their facility in Chepstow, Gloucestershire. Railton and Dawn made the 150 mile round-trip up to three times a week to visit him and were delighted when they were finally allowed to bring him home to the village of Combe on September 22 last year. The cost of quarantine was in excess of £2,000, excluding six months of food and vets' bills. The remaining money was spent on petrol going to visit the cat, his flight back from Egypt, a taxi to Luxor Airport and also Egyptian vet bills. Railton said: "I left Dawn to sort out the finances - I didn't care what it cost, I just wanted him home. "He has loved his new surroundings her, particularly the fields and woods where he could roam to his heart's content." Now the pair have launched a desperate appeal after Omar went missing two weeks ago, almost a year to the day after he left quarantine. The heartbroken couple, who run Elliotts of Oxford Fine Confectionary and Superior Nuts, have been putting up posters and fliers through neighbours' letter boxes in a bid to find their pet. They have offered a £25 reward for the cat's return - and a lifetime's supply of chocolate.
